TITLE:
Soft Goods Designer
Summary:
Designs and develops new Personal Protective Systems products and coordinates the transfer of technology Design Engineering into production to ensure manufacturability, either with internal manufacturing or subcontractors. The incumbent must work well independently with minimum direction, as well as in a team environment.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Analyzes and interprets engineering requirements for the optimal fitting and assembly of new Personal Protective systems products
- Investigates and devises design concepts and solutions for new products
- Designs and fabricates mock-ups, prototypes and finished assemblies with the Soft Goods team
- Collaborates with design engineers in other groups on related development projects
- Designs and creates engineering documents, Bill of Materials, Bill of Labor, MAPs, material specifications, patterns, markers, etc
- Produces and reviews release production packages and related technical documentation for production Interfaces with internal and external manufacturing engineering groups and contractors during advanced prototype builds to transfer technology of new products to production
- Conducts testing and validation of soft goods products and prototypes with the Design Engineering team
- Assists in the verification of production work and initiation of changes as required
- Provides training for internal and subcontractor production staff and quality inspectors
- Provides technical support to other departments, suppliers and customers for the deployment of new PPS products
- Continuous Improvement initiatives and COGS reduction
- Undertakes a leadership role in investigating and implementing product and process cost reduction efforts
- Reviews manufacturing processes and recommends alternative methods and systems for Quality, process improvement and cost reduction
- Reviews existing product designs and recommends design enhancements Initiates design Change Requests for product improvements if required and oversees their implementation to ensure full compliance
- Conducts research into new technologies, suppliers and processes and makes recommendations for product Design for Manufacturability and industry best practices
Qualifications:
- Secondary School Graduation Diploma essential Degree or College diploma in garment design and manufacture desired
- Courses in tailoring, clothing design, pattern making, and sewing, or equivalent experience
- Eight to ten years experience as a soft goods designer
- Significant experience in a clothing manufacturing environment
- Experience in military protective clothing is a definite asset
- Strong ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English, including the ability to describe information, concepts and ideas and to convey instructions to others
- Proficiency in soft goods production processes and technology
- Ability to interpret technical information, drawings and production documents
- Ability to independently manage, organize, and complete work activities in order to meet or exceed established deadlines/priorities
- Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment to meet departmental goals
- Familiarity with computer-aided design and manufacturing software
- Work is performed in a mixed Office / production environment
- Limited travel may be required to other facilities or suppliers
